How to Get Rid of Dust Mites in Your Home

Dust mites. You’ve probably heard of them, and maybe you even know you’re allergic to them. But do you actually know what they are? You can’t see the tiny, white, insect-like creatures living in your bedding, mattresses, and furniture with the naked eye, but if you look through a microscope, you’ll see that they have eight legs. Although dust mites don’t sting or bite, they can be problematic since some individuals develop an allergy to dust mite feces, which causes symptoms like a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing and coughing, itchy eyes, nose, mouth, or skin, and more.

Happily, there are steps you can take to rid your bedroom of dust mites, like using dust-proof covers on your mattress and box springs, washing sheets, pillowcases, and blankets weekly in hot water, and vacuuming weekly. Learn more about dust mites, how to ditch them, and what to do if you experience dust mite allergies in this informative graphic.

Secret Spring Cleaning Checklist: Have You Done All 10?

Even if you are a neat freak and your toilets shine, bed has fresh clean linens, and your kitchen is spotless, what areas have you missed? Dust and dirt can easily build up in unexpected places, leaving areas that we forget during routine housecleaning. To make sure you get your home clean from top to bottom this spring, cover these 10, easy-to-miss places.

1. Washing Machine –

You may think the washing machine takes care of itself, but it is actually one of the grimiest places in your home. Try adding two cups of vinegar and one-half cup of baking soda to the drum. Run an empty cycle on the highest level and at the hottest water temperature. When the cycle is done, wipe inside the drum with a damp cloth. Don’t forget to clean the area where the fabric softener goes. You can clean it manually using a rag or toothbrush, or by running soapy water through it.

2. Personal Electronic Devices –

Cell phones, TV remotes, gaming controllers, keyboards, and tablets are at the top of list most people forget to clean. Remove the batteries and wipe down all items with an anti-bacterial wipe to keep germs from spreading. A Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol works wonders between the buttons.

3. Toaster –

Can you even remember the last time you cleaned your toaster? Those crumbs have to go somewhere. After unplugging, make sure you remove and dump the crumb drawer regularly.

4. Under Appliances –

You can’t avoid cleaning behind the refrigerator or under the stove forever! Pull out appliances, clean the coils with a vacuum, then wipe down the walls, floor, and all sides with a damp rag.

5. Closet floors –

The carpet can become a breeding ground for mold and mildew. At least once a year, pull everything out of the closets and give the space a thorough cleaning.

6. Indoor Plants –

Whether real or silk, plants can accumulate a surprising amount of dust. Use a microfiber cloth to wipe down each fake leaf, or a wet cloth to wipe live plants.

7. Curtains –

Dust, pollen, and mold can build up on your curtains. Start at the top and work your way down by using a vacuum or damp cloth to remove any dust.

8. Throw Pillows –

We are used to washing the pillowcases we sleep on, but our throw pillows? Even though they are just decoration, they still accumulate dead skin and dirt. If they are not machine washable, vacuum up dust and spot-clean with a cloth.

9. Garbage Bins –

Their name implies they are supposed to be dirty, but washing garbage cans out with a hose will make taking out the trash a less stinky chore.

10. Buttons on the Garage Door Opener –

Mine were filthy!

Keeping your home clean is no small feat, but you may want to add these to your list this spring. How many places have you forgotten to clean?
